They say spring arrives at Britain in the south-west corner of England, and then spreads at walking pace. This morning I got on my bike to see if it had arrived here in North Yorkshire. There were no obvious signs. The wind was cold and the hedges still leafless. Sheep bunched forlornly at gates; no blossom whitened the blackthorn. Then I came to the sheltered valley.
