When I was sentenced to 16 months in prison, it was the first time I had found myself at the business end of the criminal justice system. I’d had a military career and I’d never been in trouble with the police before. That helped me to settle into the prison routine, when I was sent on remand to HMP Hewell in the West Midlands, but the consequences of that, and of being convicted of aggravated bodily harm, were huge. I had lost my job, my profession, my career, and I would be homeless when I got out. I had no family waiting for me.
