The path was slotted with slender hoof marks. Usually only humans and horses leave footprints here; and occasionally roe deer, slipping secretly from the woods. But these marks must have been made by a herd of heavy animals.

Then I saw half a dozen sheep bunched in the thorn thicket by the narrow, bridleway gate. Gate closed, they were locked out from their own field.
