‘This could set back the cause of true equality’
 

When I worked for the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) as a young press officer in the 1980s and 1990s, our strategy was to take on legal cases to ensure that the relatively new sex discrimination laws would make a difference in the workplace. Successful cases were brought against employers who dismissed women who became pregnant and who paid a woman less than a man doing an identical job, and against employees guilty of sexual harassment.
