Theatre has generally been wary of drama about Parliament, due to producers’ fears about both content – reflecting a traditional English view that politics are inherently boring – and box-office prospects, as a left-wing political play risks alienating potential ticket-buyers from the Right, and vice versa.

As a result, the list of classic plays about the practice (rather than the social consequences) of politics has been short – until recently.
