Stockings this Christmas will no doubt be bulging with the latest smartphones, to the concern of many worried about sourcing rare minerals essential for their manufacture and conditions for the workers who assemble them. But now there is an alternativeWith a 4.3-inch screen, the Fairphone looks like any other smartphone, halfway between an iPhone 5S and a Samsung Galaxy SIII. After that, things are deliberately different. The Dutch entrepreneur behind the initiative, Bas van Abel, has set out to produce the most ethical phone on the market. So far the Fairphone has attracted huge interest. All 25,000 phones that were available to pre-order have been sold and prospective buyers are being invited to join a waiting list.
