It is not a message that a general practitioner expects to hear very often: “Please call the hospital about a 12-year-old girl. She wants to come home to die.” But this was how I came to care for Lizzie.

I pulled Lizzie’s notes up on my computer before speaking to the cancer nurse. I could see immediately that this was going to be a difficult case.
