It is 100 years since Pope Benedict XV made a dramatic attempt to end the First World War by sending the rulers of the belligerent powers a “peace note”, offering seven practical bases for a negotiated peace settlement.

From the moment of Giacomo della Chiesa’s election as Pope on 3 September 1914, he had sought to bring the war to an end and to assist its victims, both military and civilian.
