The second half of 2017 begins for Francis with some important changes in the Roman Curia: the imminent departure to Australia (for now, officially on leave) of a prelate called to Rome by Francis, Cardinal George Pell, and the departure of Cardinal Gerhard Müller from the prefecture of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The decision not to renew Cardinal Müller’s five-year term gave Pope Francis the opportunity to make his most important Curia appointment so far – and he has decided to elevate Spanish Archbishop Luis Ladaria Ferrer to be the new head of the CDF.
