The slow beat of a drum in the Beirut street below my window woke me at about two o’clock in the morning. Between beats, a dirge-like, hoarse voice called out admonitions in Arabic. “O, God of Muhammad,” one went, “take away our worry.”
The drum and the voice belonged to the neighbourhood mesaharati.
