Common sense was missing ingredient


 

A perception is growing that in any collision between the right to freedom of religion and the right of gay men and women not to be discriminated against, the gay side of the argument always wins. This view will be furthered after the Northern Ireland appeal court judgment which upheld a finding of unlawful discrimination against a bakery shop that refused to decorate a cake with the words “Support Gay Marriage”. The couple who owned the bakery said the requested message was against their religious beliefs as they were committed evangelical Christians. The man trying to order the cake was gay, and went to the Northern Ireland Equality Commission in order to mount a legal challenge, which he won. That verdict has now been upheld on appeal.
