Parties must draw policy red lines


 
Rarely has there been so much uncertainty about Britain’s political future or such a lack of confidence in the democratic process. The polls show that the two major parties are level, as various smaller parties jockey to maximise their influence. The serious degree of political disillusionment among the public may be due to a worrying disconnection between what the political parties in Britain are saying they will do if elected on 7 May, and what is likely to be the reality of a hung Parliament. Where no party has an overall majority in the House of Commons, the policies the parties campaigned for are assumed to be eligible for pouring into a melting pot in the search for a basis for coalition. The outcome may be a government with a package of policies that nobody actually voted for
