Something in the air


 
The darkness that Scripture says was one of the 10 plagues with which Egypt was assailed has been attributed to ancient dust storms in the Sahara desert. The same non-miraculous explanation is being offered by meteorologists for the fine dust that has been polluting the atmosphere across parts of Europe including Britain this week, causing a visible haze. There is no obvious link to climate change. But Lord (Rowan) Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury, chose this fortuitous moment to warn, Old Testament-prophet style, that civilisation was fouling the air it breathed by its extravagant consumption of fossil fuel, and would have to face the consequences.
