Confused English football fans have suddenly found themselves spectators at other people’s culture wars, namely a French debate about the meaning of a particular arm movement. It is called a quenelle, and it consists of pointing the right arm downwards, palm open, and placing the left hand on the right shoulder. The row only crossed the Channel when the French international Nicolas Anelka, currently playing for West Bromwich Albion, made the sign after scoring a goal in a match against West Ham. Caring for children together with my wife we never lapsed into these stereotypes of feminity or masculinity doing both what have to be done. But I still think women usually are better in some areas and men in other although it is a dynamic process.
