Why does the designation of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel cause such bitter controversy? The explanation is religious. At Yom Kippur and Passover Jews all over the world pray L’Shana Haba’ah B’Yerushalayim – “Next year in Jerusalem” – a pious hope that has become inextricably linked with contemporary Middle Eastern politics. It makes Jerusalem a symbol of Israel’s redemption, not only because the city is its capital but because it was the site of the Second Temple.
