One terse phrase from the King James Bible etched in the nation’s consciousness is from Proverbs 29:18: “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” It offers a timely judgement on the state of British politics at the turn of the year. New Year messages from the nation’s political leaders abound, but inspiring visions of the future they are not. They boil down to two mundane messages relating to the economy – on the one hand that, thanks to the Government, the nation’s finances are at last improving; and on the other, that people’s personal finances are not.
