Reopen the nuclear weapons debate


 

With the threat of nuclear war closer than at any time since the Cuban missile crisis in 1962, Pope Francis is insisting that the issue of nuclear disarmament should be given priority. The Holy See has just become one of the first sovereign states to sign and ratify a new United Nations treaty which commits signatories not to “develop, test, produce, manufacture, otherwise acquire, possess or stockpile nuclear weapons”. Obviously the Vatican does not have Trident submarines. But the United Kingdom does. Can the Church in England and Wales and in Scotland heed the Pope’s anti-nuclear leadership?
