Glimpses of Eden


 

For years it has lain forgotten in the spinney. I pass it every time I walk the bridleway, but today I stopped to look more carefully at the old gate. Its five bars fortified with a single diagonal brace, its heavy oak grain dappled by the deep shade of the hawthorns’ new growth, it reposed in the bottom of the spinney like a holed rowing boat resting on the bed of a lily pond.
