‘If Francis looks around the Vatican, he will find a number of women already in post’


 
Certain wags say that the Church of England’s main job is to be a testing ground for the Catholic Church. But with the C of E edging ever closer to having women bishops, we are a very long way from experiments over the role of women edging out of the Anglican lab into the Catholic world.And yet with a new Pope and his comments about the need for a new theology of women, there has been speculation about change in Catholicism too. Certainly, with his council of cardinals, who will be meeting again in the coming months, there is evidence that structural reform is afoot. The gestures of the man, from his embrace of the seriously deformed Vinicio Riva to his humorous encounters with young people, suggest someone at ease with himself and with others.
