‘Being gay is who you are, and God doesn’t make junk,’ a straight man said

When they come to analyse major shifts and changes in society, cultural theorists speak of “fault lines”. They sometimes apply the London Underground’s famous safety warning: “Mind the gap”. Two recent events made me aware of contemporary Catholicism’s major fault lines, and how we need to very carefully mind the gaps.

The first was a gathering for 85 well-educated Catholics aged 18–25. Quickly, conversation settled on one of the many consequences of the clergy sexual abuse crisis: the Church’s lack of credibility in its moral teaching. It appeared none of them would give the Church’s position much weight because the gap between our teaching and practice has been revealed to be just too great.

The case study in this discussion became same-sex marriage. As well as I tried to positively present the Church’s ideas about the nature of marriage – and this was before Pope Francis said the Church should apologise for the way it treated gay people in the past – not only did these young Catholics reject these arguments, it also was clear they just didn’t understand them.

Some of them are gay – in or out. They have gay brothers and sisters, relatives, friends and colleagues. LGBTI people are not “other” to them. I discovered that the nature/nurture debate has been resolved. Natural law came in for a hammering: “Being gay is who you are, and God doesn’t make junk,” one of the straight men stated.

Richard Leonard and the “straight man” only get away with saying that homo- and “trans”- sexual people are made that way by God, in a climate of belief in moral virtue, not as objectively absolute, personal value, but only as relatively subjective, political consensus over socially devised rules of behaviour. That is why the gathering of well-educated Catholics aged 18–25 could not see any difference between what sex and marriage morally ought to be, and what social convention legislates their acceptance as. Nor could they see the very way God creates people, otherwise than as set by, and having to ‘rubber stamp’, their own behaviour. So, what the “straight man” really meant, is that it is BEING GOD that is the way GOD is made by PEOPLE with homo- and/or “trans”- sexual orientation, and by HUMAN society generally. That would indeed go down well in a gathering of Catholics who probably only understand ‘God’, anyway, as another word for ‘society’.

That a gathering of well-educated Catholics aged 18–25 wouldn’t understand the nature of marriage, might well result from a failure to distinguish morality from emotion, especially if the failure is aggravated by an even more fundamental failure to distinguish personal identity from personal qualities or circumstances. While who someone is, is always what someone is, what someone is is not always who someone is. To deny this, as Richard Leonard and his proverbial “straight man” appear to, renders one unable to distinguish virtue from vice generally and also in connection with homo- and “trans”- sexuality. This is explained more fully in the first two of the first four of the comments on Richard Leonard’s column, which readers will be able to access more readily if they are not held up by the unexplained repetition, by the third, of the fourth, comment, both by Taylor Borg, neither of which are, in any case, as relevant to this discussion as the first two comments are.

My name is Taylor Borg,All thanks goes to Dr.Trust for saving my marriage from toning apart.i feel so grateful and only have good words about a powerful spell caster named Dr.Trust who helped me bring back my wife. We had been apart for 4 months, at first I was thinking if I was doing the right thing by contacting a spell caster, but I so much love my wife and won't give her up for anything in this world. I decided to contact Dr.Trust through his mail address I found on several testifiers messages online, and I told him about my situation, he laughed and told me my wife will be back to me in the next 48 hours. I felt it wasn't going to happen at first until my wife called me and was so eager to have me back more than anything on earth.. Now we are together and she cant do without me,and both of us are happy. I feel so happy sharing this testimony because there was no negative act attached to his work. His work was smooth and fast. Thanks to Dr.Trust for bringing back happiness to my life. I swear with my life that Dr.Trust is a man to trust and take your problems to. You can contact him on his e-mail if you really truly want your love back. dr.(ULTIMATESPELLCAST@GMAIL.COM OR ULTIMATESPELLCAST@YAHOO.COM TEL: +2348156885231). http://ultimatespellcast8.wix.com/ultimatespellcast

Another Church teaching, that of 'Humanae vitae', has since its publication in 1968, proven itself to be accurate in its predictions. Those key notions were an increase in infidelity and moral decline, a general loss of respect for women, governmental abuse of power and excessive domination of the human body in its not be being treated as a natural given gift. Janet Smith and Mary Eberstadt in the U.S.A. have elaborated upon the historical fulfillment of these predictions in their writings. One aspect of this is Eberstadt's holding that the Anglican opening up of birth control in 1930 contributed, ultimately, to the implosion of that Church's unity. I think that to the extent that the Catholic Church and its members learn to hate the sin but not the sinner, the better off all will be. However, it would be a grave mistake to say that homosexual acts are themselves fine and not sinful. There would be no charity in doing that.

What anything is, is indeed what God makes it to be, and that includes junk, but nothing can be what God does not make it to be, and that also includes junk. God neither makes junk to be very valuable, nor homosexual, and other sexually deviant practices, natural, either to human or to non-human animals. Such practices are failed attempts to compensate for inability to fulfil natural, heterosexual functions. They are, unlike left handedness, physically, psychologically and morally unhealthy, and as such no more what humans or non-human animals are, than any disease, disability or vice is. It is not to such practices, therefore, but to our common nature as human beings that we still owe respect and goodwill to all sexually deviant people. Civic pressure to inveigle or enforce respectability of sexual deviance as a practice, by dressing up its bodily exploitation and/or mutilation, as love and/or fulfilment, or by treating simple cohabitation as marriage, will only annihilate sexuality and abolish the family.
