The press knew what Advent meant – calendars, mostly with chocolate


 
It’s Advent. We know that, but I was wondering if the newspapers would notice, so I rummaged through them at the weekend. Before I report on my findings, I want to mention something striking about the Duke of Edinburgh.The Duke always used to have “gaffes” attributed to him by the press. Now that he is 94, his sharp remarks are admired as amusing jokes. “It was hilarious. He was on cracking form. He is amazing for his age,” said stubbly Paul Tillbrook in Malta last week after the Duke had said to him in passing: “It isn’t difficult, you know, to shave in the morning!”The royal banter was reported in pretty much identical words by a number of national papers in Britain, for the simple reason that the visit to Malta by the Queen and her husban
