Being a Catholic comes in handy in all sorts of unexpected ways. This week, for example, it’s been enormously useful in helping me understand some of the arguments going on in the Labour Party, especially where women leaders are concerned. Women at the top? No, they don’t really matter; it’s absolutely fine for the shadow cabinet if the Leader of the Opposition, the deputy leader of the Labour Party, and the shadow chancellor, home and foreign secretaries are all male. Men can represent women (especially if we’re around to make the tea and make sure they’ve got a stack of clean shirts). Men know stuff. They have a proper grasp of world affairs.
