The key gospel value is not material poverty but poverty of spirit


 
This summer those who could afford a holiday have been uncomfortably reminded about those who couldn’t: Greece, the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean, human trafficking. There is no virtue in being poor. Virtue lies in being non-possessive. The more possessions you have, the more there is to cling to. This is why you often find a greater and freer spirit of generosity and sharing in a poor household than in a rich one. Once in the Philippines I spent a joyous morning in a poor barrio. We were greeted by a band and served refreshments; the meeting was a celebration. I spoke in the village hall and, during the session, my attention was drawn to a small box resting on a stand in the corner.
