‘Unlike Zippo the Clown, nuns really do go about their lives dressed in their odd clothes’


 
There seems to me some mental confusion behind the notion that a good press photo is to be had from nuns dressed in habits doing something ordinary like riding a bicycle or shovelling snow. The confusion is to suppose that they are doing something out of role, as if a town mayor worked in a fish-and-chip shop wearing his feathered hat and gold chain. This nun category-error was evident in some election pictures published by The Guardian. One showed Zippo the Clown in full make-up and big shoes on his way to vote, just happening to pass two strongmen from the same circus. It was as though Zippo arrived home each day and ate his fish fingers for supper and kissed his children good night still wearing his red nose and outsized shoes.
