Glimpses of Eden


 
Easter Monday and the traditional Easter egg hunt had come round again. My German sister-in-law first instigated it, and now it’s part of our calendar. Chocolate eggs are hidden over about an acre of terrain, and the children given baskets. The hunt takes place at a local beauty spot whose exposed plateau stands on top of biscuit-coloured cliffs, which rise from steep, wooded sides. The thousand-foot high view was described by famous vet James Herriot as the finest in England. To stand there and look out is to feel the whole world spread out before you. Last year, in a biting wind we shivered; this year, we wore T-shirts. Last year, we had the place to ourselves, this year the hills were alive with bicycle wheels, hiking boots, dogs and laughter.
