ROMANS HAVE been talking about the announcement of the Jubilee Year, the Year of Mercy beginning in December. One unavoidable question is how a borderline-bankrupt city, whose carabinieri have a habit of taking the day off if there’s anything exciting going on (85 per cent of the force called in sick on New Year’s Eve), will be able to police an event which will bring extra millions into an already overcrowded city. Questions of security, with the so-called Islamic State active just across the Mediterranean, are also significant.A more interesting talking point is whether there is an ulterior motive behind this Jubilee Year.
