Debate surrounding immigration can all too easily drift into prejudice

Immigration is likely to be a significant subject in the minds of the electorate as the general election approaches. But is the issue a genuine point in the minds of voters or is it exploited by some politicians as they seek electoral gain? There are over 5.5 million UK citizens living overseas, including nearly 2 million in the EU. That compares favourably to the 2.34 million EU citizens living in the UK. But that’s not the impression I heard on BBC Radio 4 last week when one representative of a political party told us that the problem was really those EU immigrants coming from Southern and Eastern Europe.
