I rather miss the whooping and thumping of slightly wild joy that I used to feel


 
As part of my New Year review I have been confronting an uncomfortable little hypocrisy. In a number of these columns over the past year or so I have urged, even demanded, that people become more open and articulate about their personal spiritual practice, about what they do and what they experience when they pray; but I have never done so myself.I do think it is important. This praying thing is faith’s USP – its unique selling point. We have this extraordinary resource that clearly both intrigues and attracts people. Why do we tend to keep it as a slightly shady secret or an embarrassing little habit like picking our noses? Even the many excellent books on “how to pray” do not often tell us much about the writers’ own practice in personal, poetic or emotiona
