Market fundamentalism, or neoliberalism, has become an unstoppable juggernaut


 
Like Ukip’s leader Nigel Farage, I too have sat on a train from London’s Charing Cross hearing every language except English, at least until we reach Grove Park in Lewisham. But my reaction could not be more different from his, which may be summarised as “how dare they come over here and speak their language in our trains?” – or more simply still, “Britain ain’t what it used to be”. In contrast, I find the mingling of faiths, races, traditions and languages that defines modern British urban life both enriching now and full of future promise. This fascinating renewal of the gene pool and refilling of the cultural tank is, I sincerely believe, our best hope of making Britain great again. Nevertheless, Ukip has a certain point.
