‘A science background is somehow a qualification for giving views about religious beliefs’


 
Is Britain a Christian country? “I believe we should be more confident about our status as a Christian country,” David Cameron, the Prime Minister, wrote in an article for Easter in the Church Times. He added that “we” should be “more evangelical about a faith that compels us to get out there and make a difference to people’s lives”. The non-churchy papers, led by The Daily Telegraph, passed on the news, not so much in an apostolic spirit, but a little sceptically, since Mr Cameron had previously said his faith was “bit like the reception for Magic FM in the Chilterns: it sort of comes and goes”.That word “evangelical” seemed suspicious.
