‘I was desperate to call on God to change the course that lay ahead’

 
I am not a particularly pious or devout person: passages from Scripture do not tend to replay themselves through my mind on a regular basis, nor do they trip easily off my tongue. So I was surprised when, two weeks ago, my head was suddenly filled with the words from Matthew 26:39. And try as I did, those words would not be shaken away.I was not aware, at the time, that the passage actually was from Matthew 26:39; in fact I have just looked up the reference now, and to save you from having to tap into Google I will tell you what it says: “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me …”In my mind the word “Father” would not have been there: I have long found it useful to think of God as a mother rather than a father figure (and if you have never do
