I heard a story about Pope Francis recently. One of his wing men was reading the draft of his encyclical Laudato si’. He approached the Pope and said, “Holy Father, you’ve used a word here that we can’t find in any dictionary.”
The Pope looked at him. “Italian? English?” “It’s not in any of them.” “Well then,” the Pope said. “It will have to be invented.” So invented it has been. “The continued acceleration of changes affecting humanity and the planet”, writes the Pope in the final version of the encyclical, “is coupled today with a more intensified pace of life and work which might be called ‘rapidification’.”
