Gender politics, I have to confess, leave me cold and the latest aspect of it – gender fluidity, or neutrality, leaves me even colder. I live across the road from a girls’ school where pupils are free to choose their gender; I can’t draw money from an ATM near work without a screen appearing to let me know that my bank has opted for gender neutral titles for customers; and when official forms offer me the choice of gender: men, women or other, I find myself gravitating towards the “prefer not to say” option.
