Glimpses of Eden


 
You’re never alone. I’d only been among the alders for a minute or so when the robin appeared on a nearby branch. I was digging out saplings to replant and the activity must have attracted the bird. It flew to an even closer branch, and watched.For a moment, the whole world seemed to be passing through the robin’s large, liquid eye. Still on my knees (digging deep with a trowel requires your working close to the earth) the hungry bird flew down and snatched a worm from the disturbed ground. What is it that makes robins so trustful?Yet it wasn’t just a robin keeping me company on this cold, winter day; not long later, I disinterred a hibernating toad.
