This is a gripping account of a long love affair. The BBC first sent Tim Slessor to make a film in the American West  in 1961 and 1963. Then he took time out and worked for a year on the High Plains, where he was “completely hooked” by the “people, history, skies, scale, everything about it”.

The West has much changed in the nearly six decades since the first of Slessor’s many visits. Those “old-timers” he met in 1961 are now long gone, yet his respect for them and for the immediacy of the place’s history, “something between awe and privilege”, pervades this beautifully crafted, extensively documented book.
