CARDINAL FRANCIS GEORGE OMI

Cardinal Francis George, Arch­bishop of Chicago, died on 17 April 2015 after several years of treatment for cancer, only a few days after he had completed the introduction to this collection of eight essays. He was a member of a missionary order, the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, a scholar with several doctorates, a teacher in various universities, a provincial and then vicar general of his order, bishop and archbishop of three dioceses, and president of the US Bishops’ Conference. As well as the intellectual leader of the American hierarchy, George was known as a compassionate pastor with a special concern for the poor and disabled. As a young man, he had been rejected from the diocesan preparatory seminary on the grounds of physical disability resulting from polio.
