Adam’s father, Sten, a Vietnam vet and retired school principal, is trying to understand what’s driven his psychotic 25-year-old son to murder and cause mayhem in the woods of Mendocino county. Violence is also part of Sten’s DNA, but it finds more acceptable outlets.The California of The Harder They Come is rife with paranoia, rage and right-wing conspiracy theories. Forty-year-old Sara, Adam’s on-off lover, is obsessed with the illegitimacy of the US Government. When the police stop her for not wearing a seatbelt, she tells them that she has no contract with the republic of California so they have no authority over her.
