The story of the Catholic struggle for rights is one that Antonia Fraser has always wanted to write. Having converted to Catholicism at the age of 14, she has had a lifelong fascination with Catholic history. Her Pakenham forebears were Irish landowners belonging to the Protestant Ascendancy, so she has a foot in both camps of the Catholic question.
