Unlike many professional philosophers, John Gray writes in a clear and attractive prose, so you always know what he’s getting at, even if you may not always agree with him. And he defines his terms. Atheism “does not amount to much”, he tells us, “it is simply the absence of the idea of a creator-god”. Religion is “an attempt to find meaning in events, not a theory that tries to explain the universe”.
