Back in the autumn of 1981, I was asked to review a volume of short stories by the 29-year-old William Boyd, which I commended for the precise observation, the wit, the style. Now, 36 years later, we have the 65-year-old Boyd’s fifth collection of short stories, The Dreams of Bethany Mellmoth. They are quite brilliant.
