Samuel Beckett wrote 22 stage plays, the extreme infrequency and brevity of the later works suggesting that he felt he had done enough in theatre. In the modern fashion, though, there has been a posthumous attempt to expand his dramatic output. The radio play All That Fall has twice been adapted for stage, and now Lisa Dwan has reworked a selection from the writer’s 1960s prose pieces, Texts for Nothing, into a 70-minute monologue she calls No’s Knife.

The Irish actress is a Beckett specialist, her performance of his stage shorts, Not I/ Footfalls/Rockaby, a success in London, Dublin and New York. Combining a dancer’s flexibility with a singer’s vocal range, Dwan is an ideal interpreter of an author who paid as much attention to physical shapes as spoken phrases.
