Proms at The Chapel; Prom 25
OLD ROYAL NAVAL COLLEGE, GREENWICH, and Royal Albert Hall, London
Acoustically, the Royal Albert Hall was always a poor venue for music and even with the dampening ceiling mushrooms, it is really suitable only for the large scale choral and symphonic repertoire. Authentic performances of more intimate works tend to underwhelm in the vast spaces, as happened with the King’s College Choir’s Fauré’s Requiem at the start of the season. So the BBC Singers must have been relieved to see their Prom performance of Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle on the middle weekend scheduled instead for the Baroque chapel of the Old Royal Naval College at Greenwich.
