The hardcore soccer fan could happily have spent several hours drifting through Radio 5 Live’s commemoration of the half-century of England’s World Cup victory. Fan reminiscence was covered in 66: We Were There (23 July); the day itself came theatrically recreated in a Wembley spectacular starring Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst and with Martin Freeman playing the part of the late Bobby Moore (30 July.) Best of all, though, was the two-hour documentary That Was Then, This Is Now (27 July), in which former BBC football correspondent Mike Ingham conducted England veteran Jimmy Armfield and sports writer Jeff Powell through their memories of the day itself and the era of which it was so symbolically a part.
