Occasionally, perhaps not even once a season, the Proms provides an experience in which the deepest hushed stillness comes over the audience of five thousand and it is not sleep. It happened as July closed this year and the 87-year-old conductor Bernard Haitink led the London Symphony Orchestra to a glimpse of midnight eternity at the Nietzschean heart of Mahler’s Third Symphony. The senses were sharpened by the immaculate brass statement at the start, alerted to vivid tone colour by the shaking viola episode and transfixed by the seemingly ritualised pounding of the double timpanists in the vast expanse of the exposition.
