The world of rock music is full of incident and humour, but it has given rise to only a handful of films and television drama series. That changed this week, though, with the start of Vinyl (15 February).An import from American channel HBO, Vinyl boasts Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese among its creators. It also benefits from a seemingly vast budget, allowing cinematic production values – in this first double episode, directed by Scorsese himself, a building fell down – and a powerful musical soundtrack of original recordings. That is Scorsese’s forte, as is the deep-brown colour palette and the crackling dialogue that constantly explodes into operatic bouts of swearing.The series begins in 1973 with “record man” Richie Finestra (Bobby Cannavale), in the back
