With theatre based on famous material, there is often a tension in the presentation. A lot of the audience have come because they think they know what they are getting, but it may be a matter of pride to the director and actors to tell the tale freshly.In a perfect illustration of this phenomenon, purchasers of tickets for Jane Eyre at the National Theatre may be alarmed, if they have read the novel that Charlotte Brontë published in 1847 under the pseudonym Currer Bell, to encounter a set by designer Michael Vale that resembles a large wooden climbing frame around a central space holding the piano, drum kit and double bass of a jazz trio. These look an unlikely basis for the pictures or music most would associate with the story of the orphan who survives a poor and corrupt upbringin
