If future historians were to ponder the significance of end-millennium myths, they might pause over James Bond. On the evidence of 24 films at least, he is a puzzle. Professional yet an outsider, neither leader nor exactly servant, his successes are measured less by precise objectives than pre-emptive destruction; he often seems more confused about motive than his machinating foes. His muscular appearance is consistent with folk heroes but he has a less than rugged obsession with brands and clothes. He is clearly attractive to women but appears increasingly uncomfortable in their company. He is a promiscuous yet miserable misogynist.We love him still – perhaps because his six decades of incarnations give an oblique perspective on our insecurities as well as fantasies. Daniel Craig h
