The BBC has arrived very late at the “scripted reality” party. This weird hybrid of documentary and light entertainment is six years old now, starting in America with Jersey Shore and copied here in such horrors as The Only Way Is Essex and Made in Chelsea. Those are the shows that Close to the Edge (from 6 October) is emulating – and on BBC4 of all places.Close to the Edge is a seven-part series about a group of over-65s living in Bournemouth. The BBC calls it a “scripted documentary” but I doubt whether the cast had many of their lines written for them, so banal are they. Instead the writer, Alex Worrall, formerly of Made in Chelsea, has set up scenes, arranged confrontations and nurtured romances. Then the cast, carefully selected and coached, are allowed
