Marriage is a common subject on screen. More often than not a wedding concludes a romantic comedy, for example, just at the point when the real story is beginning. It is rare to find a film that deals as seriously with emotional upheaval in later married life. Yet, when it does, it can prove much richer.In casting Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay as Kate and Geoff, a couple about to celebrate 45 years together, writer/director Andrew Haigh plays on their histories. Both made youthful impressions on cinema audiences in the 1960s and 1970s. Both have made distinctive career choices over the years.
