In the year she turns 77, Caryl Churchill has been honoured with a volume of revivals that dramatists would generally expect only for big-landmark birthdays such as 75 or 80. The likeliest reason for this anachronistic jamboree is a feeling in theatre that she has been relatively neglected because of her gender – she is the only woman to match the critical acclaim of male playwrights of her generation such as Stoppard, Bennett and Ayckbourn – and her counter-cultural refusal to give any interviews to promote the plays.This chosen low profile has recently been challenged by revivals of Light Shining in Buckinghamshire (1976) at the National Theatre and the Young Vic’s Far Away (2000), and scrutiny intensified this month, as the Vic is hosting the Nuffield Theatre Southamp
